Implemented under German International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

The Burundi Water Sector Programme (Programme Sectoriel Eau et Assainissement – PROSECEAU) supported institutional reform and capacity strengthening within Burundi’s water supply and sanitation sector. The programme aimed to enhance governance, improve sector coordination, and promote sustainable and decentralized service delivery models aligned with the National Water Policy and legal framework.
Through technical assistance and operational support, the programme strengthened national and local capacities for planning, monitoring, and managing water services. It contributed to building a reliable information base for decision-making and laid the foundation for improved access to safe drinking water and sanitation services across the country.
• Developed a national protocol for water supply and sanitation inventory
• Trained technical staff in GIS, GPS, and field-based data collection methodologies
• Supervised nationwide inventory implementation and quality control
• Designed and implemented a database system for archiving and managing sector data
• Conducted data analysis to inform sector planning and policy development
• Contributed to strengthening national water governance and service delivery frameworks
