This assignment supported the Government of Burundi in preparing its national REDD+ Readiness Preparation Proposal (R-PP) under the UNFCCC framework. The R-PP serves as a strategic roadmap to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation while enhancing forest carbon stocks and promoting sustainable forest management.

The initiative strengthened national institutional and technical capacity for REDD+ by assessing deforestation drivers, conducting inclusive stakeholder consultations, and defining governance, monitoring, and safeguard frameworks. It positioned Burundi to engage with international readiness mechanisms and access future results-based climate finance under mechanisms such as the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility.
