SilvaCarbon – National Forest Monitoring & MRV Capacity Building

2018–2025 | International technical assistance program |Tropical Countries (Africa, Latin America & Caribbean, Southeast Asia)

Implemented under U.S. Forest Service International Program and Trade and the U.S. Geological Survey; funded by the U.S. Department of State, USAID

SilvaCarbon supported tropical countries in strengthening National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMS) and greenhouse gas reporting under the UNFCCC. The program enhanced technical capacity for activity data generation, emission factor development, NERF preparation, and land sector GHG accounting using advanced remote sensing and field methodologies.

Conducted NFMS and MRV gap assessments across multiple African countries
Delivered advanced training on land-use change detection and forest carbon stock estimation
Strengthened institutional capacity for GHG inventory preparation and reporting
Designed IPCC-aligned carbon stock training modules, including uncertainty analysis
Facilitated South–South technical exchanges on NFMS operationalization
Supporting FREL/FRL development in RoC and Cameroon
