Kalemie strengthens urban reforestation efforts through a multi-stakeholder tree planting initiative

This initiative highlights the value of coordinated local action in addressing vegetation loss and strengthening climate resilience.

On 14 March 2026, a reforestation activity was carried out in Kalemie, Tanganyika Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, through the joint engagement of the Provincial Ministry of Environment of Tanganyika and the local associations Jeunesse pour le Développement et la Conservation de l’environnement (JDCE, ADPE and Les Bâtisseurs. The initiative marked a concrete contribution to local environmental restoration efforts and reflected a shared commitment to sustainable urban development and climate action.

A total of 160 seedlings were planted across two priority sites: the courtyard of the Tanganyika Police School and the roadside along the Airport–City Raha connector. By targeting visible and strategic public spaces, the activity combined ecological restoration with community engagement, while helping improve the urban landscape and promote awareness of the role of trees in environmental protection.

This initiative highlights the value of coordinated local action in addressing vegetation loss and strengthening climate resilience. It also demonstrates how partnerships between public institutions and community-based organizations can deliver practical, place-based solutions that support greener, healthier and more sustainable cities.
