SINREX strengthens the capacity of university of Kalemie students on reforestation techniques and monitoring of reforested sites

On 30 March 2026, SINREX conducted theoretical and practical training sessions for students of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Kalemie as part of capacity-building activities aimed at strengthening beneficiaries’ knowledge and skills in reforestation techniques in order to achieve satisfactory, sustainable, and tangible results. The activity took place at the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, located 12 km from the city of Kalemie, in Tanganyika Province, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

This initiative was implemented in a challenging environmental context, as Tanganyika Province faces an estimated annual deforestation rate of 2,500 hectares. Through this training, SINREX provided students with practical knowledge on planting techniques, good maintenance practices, and approaches for monitoring reforested sites, thereby strengthening their ability to effectively carry out vegetation restoration activities in the field.

A total of 100 lemon tree seedlings were planted during the activity, combining hands-on learning, vegetation restoration, and the promotion of agroforestry practices. Beyond its immediate contribution to increasing vegetation cover in Tanganyika Province in particular and the DRC in general, this initiative also creates long-term prospects for fruit production, food security improvement, and income generation through the sale of surplus produce.
